Celebrating Yacht Rock
06 December 2013, Posted in: Folded Wing Recommends

If you follow us on Twitter, you’ll know that now Jim has had his first mince pie of the season, Christmas has officially begun here in the Folded Wing office.

We’re very pleased to announce that, alongside our usual shows, we'll be delivering a very special show for BBC Radio 2 this festive season, Katie Puckrik’s Yacht Rock.

Yacht Rock is a two-hour special to be aired on Friday 27th December between 10pm and Midnight  that celebrates the classic smooth Yacht Rock sound of the ’70s and ’80s (think Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers, Hall & Oates and Robert Palmer).

As a self-confessed Yacht Rock enthusiast Katie Puckrik will talk about her love for the genre and how listening to it makes us all feel happy, sexy, and rich. It’s a feel good escape that floats us on imaginary yachts to the fantasy islands of our dreams!

For this week's blog it's only fitting then, that we get our yacht rock-on and pick our favourite smooth tunes...

Lucy’s Choice: Alessi Brothers - 'Seabird'

Years ago a Yacht Rock aficionado friend of mine made me an extensive spotify playlist intended to educate me, and this song is by far my most played. I also feel like, given the name of the genre, it has a very appropriate title.

Andrea's Choice: Africa - 'Toto'

I don't think you can have an explanation or justification for choosing this track - it's just good solid cheese. The video's really funny too, all set on a giant book with some nice mullets and beige shirts thrown in.

Jim’s Choice: Steely Dan - 'Time Out Of Mind'

From the Dan's 1980 'Gaucho' LP... smooth, slick and funky in all the right ways, as only Steely Dan can! In true Steely Dan style Donald Fagen and Walter Becker apparantly used 42 session musicians in the recording of the 'Gaucho' album and if you've seen the 'Classic Albums' programme on the making of their 'Aja' LP, you can well believe it. Essential viewing for all muso's!

Sandie’s Choice: YMCA – 'Village People'

This is the smoothest selection for me, must be an age thing!

In 1978, this was one of the fun songs of that year

PLUS, it was the same year my lovely Daughter (Karen P) was born!

Karen's Choice: The Stepkids - 'The Lottery'

Love this band.. Stones Throw smash it again & when I listen to their album I  imagine driving along a sunny highway inbetween LA & San Fran.. Ummm Sunshine!

Matt’s Choice: Fleetwood Mac - 'The Chain'

Being a 90s child, I can’t pretend that the smooth music of the 70s is my biggest area of musical knowledge but what I do know is that I love Fleetwood Mac. Taken from their Rumours album, my choice has to be ‘The Chain’ – timeless smooth guitar classic!

Pete's Choice: Duckworth Lewis Method - 'Out In The Middle'

One of the newer acts that fit under the Yacht Rock title, they even mention Yachts in this song! What's not to love brilliant, catchy and witty songs, pretty much all about cricket, it's basically my perfect combo

Ian's Choice: Steve Miller Band - 'Fly Like An Eagle'

My favourite smooth rock act would be the Steve Miller Band. I love their big hits like "The Joker" and "Abracadabra", but my choice would have to be "Fly Like an Eagle". I'm a fan of Crystal Palace (known as The Eagles) and this gets played at the ground before home games.
