CM is the longest running community music company in the UK and has been working with young musicians from a variety of backgrounds since 1983.
CM’s fundamental aim is to provide innovative support, training and performance opportunities for musicians which celebrate colour, risk, quality, fusion and technology, with a particular focus on young people in Tower Hamlets.
Established by John Stevens and Dave O’Donnell, the project has trained over 1500 professional musicians, many of whom have gone on to work in the music industry and in higher and further education. It has set up or facilitated projects such as Community Music East, Community Music Wales, MIDI Music Company, London Arts Training Consortium, Asian Dub Foundation Education (ADFED), Musicians in Focus and Rising Tide at Ocean.
CM believes that the most effective way to develop musicians is to provide access to training, resources and a creative musical environment. This belief is embedded in a commitment to working with those who would not otherwise have easy access to these facilities. Recently relocated to Tower Hamlets, the organisation has enabled countless musicians and other organisations to establish themselves within the wider music industry, including Asian Dub Foundation, Courtney Pine, Goldielocks, Ctrl Z Midi Music Company and many others.
