Karen is passionate about music and radio, and finding new ways to combine the two. That’s why she founded Folded Wing, and why it’s now recognized as one of the most innovative and forward-thinking production companies in the world.
Karen’s radio career began 16 years ago at the BBC where she produced Gilles Peterson’s legendary ‘Worldwide’ show, helping it to become a globally respected and commercially successful brand.
In 2005, she left to set up the company which became Folded Wing – quickly establishing herself as an authority on podcasts and alternative audio broadcasting. Karen went on to set up groundbreaking projects and platforms across the world including Red Bull Music Academy Radio and Roundhouse Radio, with other clients including the BBC, Fabric & international brands such as Nike. Along the way, Folded Wing picked up a Sony Gold Award for the ‘Book Slam’ podcast, and last year won 5 awards in one week, most notably ‘Indie Of The Year’ at the Radio Production Awards.
Folded Wing continue to produce the Jamie Cullum show for BBC Radio 2, with Karen as Senior Producer. The programme showcases Jamie’s love of jazz, both old and new, and features guests such as Gil Scott-Heron, Dave Brubeck and film legend and jazz fan, Clint Eastwood. Last year Karen and Folded Wing also produced ‘Gloria Estefan’s Latin Beat’ for BBC Radio 2, a seven part series on Latin music presented by Gloria Estefan; and 13 BBC documentaries across Radio 1, 1Xtra and Radio 2. Seven more BBC documentaries are already scheduled for 2012.
Karen is very passionate about education and as well as her work with Roundhouse Radio, she is involved in projects such as BBC 21CC & BBC Blast, and lectures in radio and music in universities across the UK, including Westminster and Christchurch. Karen and Folded Wing also work closely with The British Council on radio projects to help educate local radio stations in countries such as Bosnia and Kazakhstan. The British Council connection continues further with Folded Wing also producing The Selector radio show.
Karen is regularly asked by organisations such as the BBC, Channel 4, the Radio Academy, and others around the world, to join discussion panels and hold motivational talks in broadcast and technology.
A respected DJ in her own right, Karen continues to perform at venues around the UK and internationally, and promote the successful ‘Broad Casting’ club nights, featuring unique performances and collaborations with artists from around the world.
