Paul Thomas has joined the Folded Wing team as Editor of Sound, Digital & Production and his main role will be overseeing the quality of all of the company’s output as well as looking after the digital side of everything we do. Paul brings with him a wealth of experience, knowledge and expertise gained from over 20 years in music and radio.
After graduating from Queen Mary & Westfield College, London with a PhD in Biomaterials, Paul began his career in music as guitarist with the band Bark Psychosis and produced soundscapes for galleries and installations around the UK.
In 1993, Paul joined Kiss 100 FM as a freelance engineer and DJ, presenting the weekly Chill Out Zone show and became Executive Producer of all specialist shows. From Kiss, Paul moved to BBC Radio 1, initially to produce the ‘One World’ series and went on to produce a full spectrum of high-profile shows. Paul became Executive Producer of the Radio 1 staff shows, as well as many of the big outside broadcasts, including Bestival and Green Man. Managing large scale outside broadcasts for the BBC has been a big part of Paul’s career, with events including Bobby & Nihal in India, Dave Pearce in Ibiza, Glastonbury, the Electric Proms and Notting Hill Carnival.
Managing a large and diverse range of talent, from John Peel and Tim Westwood to Benga and Dave Grohl, Paul has won several Sony Awards including one for the Bobby & Nihal show just 6 months after launch. Most recently, Paul won the BBC’s Best Technical Sound of 2011 Award for his documentary on the Burning Man Festival.
In 2009 Paul headed up Radio 1‘s Visualisation for all specialist shows, setting up a new department, delivering fresh digital content across a variety of platforms. He also produced and lead the Visualisation project behind Radio 1’s Official Chart Show and worked as a digital producer for BBC 6Music and BBC Radio 2.
Outside of work, Paul has his own recording studio and has produced, remixed and released over 100 tracks for labels ranging from Ninja Tune to The Big Chill. Paul produced the Official New Years Eve Countdown music for the Lord Mayor of London’s Celebrations for three years (heard by over 80 million people annually) and has produced music and sound design for radio, TV, fashion shows, art galleries and numerous international events.
As well as playing guitar for over 30 years Paul has DJ’d across the globe at many of the major festivals including Sonar and The Love Parade and ran his own club night ‘One World Live’ at the Notting Hill Arts Club. Away from the world of music Paul loves snowboarding and is a big Formula 1 fan.
