Folded Wing was approached by Punch Birmingham to create a podcast for their ground-breaking Arts Own Kind exhibition.

The exhibition itself, at the Rich Mix in Bethnal Green, features the work of Lemi Ghariokwu - the artist behind many of Fela Kuti’s classic album covers.

Lemi’s distinctive images of Africa – angry, sexy, cheeky, righteous – were owned by hundreds of thousands of people across three continents and our task was to come up with an audio response that represented the importance of Lemi’s work.

The exhibition brings together a ‘best-of’ collection and reveals how creative and repressive movements in 1970’s Lagos helped give birth to the Afrobeat Phenomenon. Such a rich history draws an unending supply of interesting people and music and we were lucky enough to have the opportunity to receive contributions from the likes of Dele Sosimi, Tony Allen, Rich Medina, Sue Steward, Charlie Dark, Segun and of course, Lemi himself. The half-hour podcast features interviews, readings of poetry and essays, and music, some of which was recorded live on the opening night.
