Mulatu and the Heliocentrics have struck again.

Not satisfied with a torrent of critical acclaim, a World Album of the Year award from the Sunday Times and a best album of 2009 accolade from Mojo magazine, the great man and his companions have now managed to bag themselves one of the highest British musical honors of all for their album ‘Inspiration Information Vol 3’. The ‘Album of the Year’ at the Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards of course!

What with pipping dubstepper Martyn and hip hopper Mos Def to the post and the Worldwide Awards showcasing only pioneers and artistic leaders of their genres, winning this trophy is no mean feat. Though it was totally deserved of course.

I know were biased… but it really is true.

Buy ‘Inspiration Information Vol 3’ on iTunes here >

And check out the other winners at this years ceremony here >

As you may have gathered, we at Folded Wing like to have our fingers in as vast a variety of quirky and interesting projects as possible. Even we couldn’t have predicted however, that this little gem would take off in such a big way. Have a read and then definitely have a listen – its sure to melt even the most hardened scrooge’s heart!

Created for digital radio and online and broadcast from 10th of December until Christmas Eve digital radio listeners can tune into a brand new digital radio station, Radio Lapland, which features all the sounds of Santa’s workshop as well as charity messages to help get people in the Christmas spirit.

Radio Lapland aims to give children an original and exciting station to listen to during the festive period, capturing their imagination as they gain an insight into Santa and his elves getting ready for Christmas. Santa’s voice was recorded by leading British film and stage actor Julian Wadham, who we had in our studio for a very amusing morning.

Space on the channel will be offered free to any UK charities who have suitable Christmas messages and appeals to run.

Radio Lapland is available on digital radio in more than 20 regions across the UK including Plymouth, Cornwall, Cardiff & Newport and South Hampshire.

The word is spreading too, all over the UK and beyond, features have sprung up in The Sun, The Guardian and Chris Evans even did a feature on his Radio 2 program this week.

There is a list of stations where you can hear the broadcast here >

You can listen online here >

And you can check out some of the national (and international) news features on the topic right here >

In this episode of Tuned In To The Future we are looking at the relationship between media and education. At the Folded Wing studios Karen P shares some hints and tips about editing music for radio.

We hear from a producer at BBC Blast, who tells us what she loves about working in media. Plus, we speak to media maestro Gail Gallie from GallieGodfrey, who launched CBeebies and worked with Roundhouse Radio. Gail explains why it’s so important for media companies to be involved in educating and tells us what they learn from the youngsters themselves.

That’s right folks, bringing a healthy dose of the deep stuff to this year’s London Jazz Festival, November’s Broad Casting welcomes the authentic and deeply spiritual jazz of Build an Ark to the stage, and asks IG Culture to chew it up and spit it out of his sampler in time for a unique dancefloor destroying DJ set at the end of the night. In fact IG’s own take on the music of the past - the Zen Badizm workshop - will also open up the night’s proceedings with their UK debut performance. Whilst Zen Badizm is built around some of the best Jazz musicians the younger generation in the UK has to offer, Build An Ark’s show features a couple of key jazz innovators of the late 20th century, Phil Ranelin and Dwight Trible. it’s only a month away so get your skates on - this will be another special night.

As we are sure you will agree, what the ladies (and gentleman!) at Folded Wing don’t know about being radiantly beautiful, isn’t worth knowing! So we were an inevitable choice for digital agency Holler when they needed someone to produce a short series of ‘radio drama’ podcasts to act as hinge in their online campaign for global beauty brand Biore.

The campaign itself focuses on the ‘Dirty Little Secret’ girl, who confesses and shares all her beauty secrets, in various forms of media, including of course the podcast series. Working with screenwriter Ben Bickerton we developed 5 episodes voiced by the Dirty Little Secret girl herself, and produced in our studios in Clerkenwell. The podcasts also benefited from some bespoke Folded Wing music content and branded audio identities.
