Last week was a busy week for Folded Wing as we prepared to head down to the 2013 Cheltenham Jazz Festival. On Friday 3 May, Jamie and the team headed down to Cheltenham to gather content for our Jamie Cullum on BBC Radio 2 Cheltenham Jazz Festival Highlights show.

The highlights show, which featured interviews with Laura Mvula, Georgie Fame and was presented by Jamie backstage at the festival, aired on Tuesday 7 May at 7pm and is available on the iPlayer until 7pm on 14 May. There is a podcast of the show available until 14 May too.

This year we also filmed some of the interviews; Jamie spoke to Georgie Fame backstage at the festival at his Hammond organ. That same night Radio 2 celebrated 70 years of Georgie Fame in a special edition of Friday Night Is Music Night and in their chat Jamie reflected on Georgie’s long and distinguished career and Georgie reminisced about his nights spent at the legendary Flamingo club.

Jamie also spoke to up-and-coming singer Laura Mvula. After a hectic year for the singer, the pair reflected on the whirlwind her career is currently going through. The pair also performed a duet of ‘Sad Sad World’ together at the festival.

The show also featured some live tracks from the festival recorded by BBC Radio 2, including 3 tracks from Georgie Fame, a track by Madeleine Peyroux and Jamie’s duet with Laura Mvula.

We have written a blog all about the day at the festival with some behind-the-scenes pictures of Jamie and the Folded Wing crew.

The shows are available to listen back to on the iPlayer and you can also get the Jamie Cullum show podcast, which features highlights from the festival.

Next week on the Jamie Cullum show on BBC Radio 2, Jamie will have GoGo Penguin in session, tune in at 7pm on Tuesday 14 May to hear that.

Our next BBC documentary series starts this Monday, 29th April on BBC Radio 2 at 10pm, in which presenter Jamie Cullum gets to talk about two of his greatest passions – jazz and films.

In the two-part series ‘Jazz at the Movies’, Jamie celebrates the work of his favourite directors, and looks at the stories behind some of the best films with jazz as their subject, or jazz on their soundtrack.

“I fell in love with jazz and movies at about the same time”, says Jamie, who studied film at Reading University. “In fact, it was great films that first made me want to look into jazz music.”

Jamie’s very personal journey takes him from Al Jolson to Spike Lee, looking along the way at the films of Duke Ellington, Clint Eastwood and Jean-Luc Godard. And he gets to meet the man behind one of his favourite films of all time, “The Fabulous Baker Boys”.

Jamie visits the Los Angeles hotel where that movie’s iconic ballroom scene was set and even, through the magic of radio, gets to perform a duet with its star, Michelle Pfeiffer.

He talks to Clint Eastwood about rebuilding the music of Charlie Parker for his biographical film “Bird”; and to the legendary trumpeter Terence Blanchard about working with Spike Lee, and teaching Denzil Washington how to hold a trumpet properly. He also meets French jazz legend Martial Solal, responsible for the haunting soundtrack to the mould-breaking “Breathless (A Bout De Souffle)”.

“I love the work of Woody Allen, film noir and the French New Wave, so these programmes are an opportunity for me to show what happens when great jazz and great films meet.”

Part 1 of ‘Jazz at the Movies’ is broadcast on Monday 29th April at 10pm, and Part 2 is on Monday 6th May at 10pm.
